AFSCME Women’s Leadership Academy Online (WLAO) Announcement

AFSCME women represent more than half of our union’s membership. Women are leading the charge to create change for working families. Given the challenges facing our union and the pending U.S. Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME, it is imperative for AFSCME women to be prepared to lead. That’s why we are excited to announce the AFSCME Women’s Leadership Academy Online.  The Academy is designed for all AFSCME women. It will provide a deeper understanding of the issues that affect working women, strengthen leadership skills and activism, and motivate AFSCME women to be leaders in their workplaces and local unions. Below are the requirements for participation in the Academy.

This Academy will include:

•              Five 60-minute webinars to be conducted once per month from May through October of 2018.

•              Completion of a short quiz/evaluation after each session

•              Completion of an AFSCME Strong action such as engaging in one-on-one conversations with co-workers to increase membership, signing up new PEOPLE contributors in your local, or getting involved in an organizing/political campaign through your local or council/affiliate.

The second  initiative is that we are taking the Women’s Leadership Academy on the road and  providing affiliates with a train-the-trainer to launch their own academy.  In this program we provide training materials, assist with  curriculum design and provide training support to help affiliates build capacity to conduct their own leadership program.  Attached is flyer of  DC 37-New York Women’s Academy which they are getting ready to launch.
