Federal money for programs and services that help millions of vulnerable Americans and employ many AFSCME members could be in jeopardy next year.

On Sunday, AFSCME Wisconsin’s PEOPLE Committee, which is responsible for the union’s political activities, endorsed Mahlon Mitchell for Governor of Wisconsin.

In a crowded primary field, Mahlon’s commitment to working people stood out said Paul Spink, President of AFSCME Wisconsin.

"As a union leader, Mahlon has been standing with AFSCME since before ACT 10," said Spink. "AFSCME is thrilled to be supporting a candidate for Governor who understands the value of public service and who will be a powerful advocate for working people as our next Governor!"

Don't fall for the scam.

When AFSCME members stand together, we have power in numbers. Together, we can defend our freedom to take our loved ones to the doctor when they get sick and retire with dignity some day. Together, we have the power to make our voices heard at work and in our democracy. That’s our AFSCME Agenda.

Public service workers across the country are losing their foothold in the middle class. So says an article in The New York Times this week that serves as a reminder of why labor unions are more needed now than ever.

AFSCME Wisconsin supports the students rallying in Madison today to save the liberal arts majors at UW-Stevens Point. We join students, faculty, alumni, and community members in expressing our dismay at the proposal to eliminate these programs.

AFSCME Wisconsin is extremely concerned to see UW Stevens Point choosing to point budget cuts at students and faculty. Wisconsin has a proud history of education, and eliminating programs that are valuble to students is a move in the wrong direction for education in this state.

Alexis Basel, a student from Middleton High School, has been awarded a national AFSCME Scholarship to assist her on the path to higher education.

Alexis was required to apply and write an essay for the scholarship, of which hers was selected among hundreds of entries.

She is eligible for the scholarship due to her family's acitive particpation in Local 2748.

Congradulations Alexis!
